I have a TYT TH-9000D 220MHz radio that, until this afternoon, has been working just great since I purchased it about a year and a half ago. Today the supply that was powering the radio accidentally got turned off while the radio itself was still turned on. When I restored power the display was scrambled, looking like a mix of Chinese characters and partially formed numbers and none of the controls function. A 'locked' symbol appears on the top right had portion of the display too. None of the controls seem to function now, including the power button. I am unable to perform the 'reset' function as outlined in the manual because I can't access the menus due to the pushbuttons all being inoperable.

When I apply power the radio comes on and displays the messed up gibberish. Does anyone know how to do a reset on this model radio when in this condition? I did try hooking my computer up with the programming software to see if I could revive the radio by reloading the backup copy of the channel data, etc. But when I try to write to or read from the radio I get an error saying the programming cable isn't connected or the radio isn't on. The computer and the programming software are in agreement about the cable being connected to com3 and Device Manager says the cable is working properly so I'm pretty sure the microprocessor in the radio needs to be reset before I'm going to be able to get the programming software to talk to the radio.

Has anyone else experienced this and come up with a fix? Does anyone have any ideas I haven't tried or thoughts of something I might be missing? Nowdays nobody uses memory backup batteries because flash memory doesn't require it. Here is what used to happen sometimes on some of the microprocessor based equipment I used to work on.
The memory might be corrupted. If that happens the firmware won't load and the CPU doesn't know what to do. The unit is non-functional. The display driver isn't receiving data so it shows random segments. Sometimes it was easy to fix. Just reload the firmware and software.
Sometimes I had to replace the memory, and maybe CPUs or FGPAs and reload all firmware and software. Unfortunately you can't do that. Good luck on even getting a schematic or any tech support at all from AnyTone or any other CCR (Cheap Chinese Radio) manufacturer. Good luck on getting firmware, or information on how to load the firmware. You don't know if they use JTAG test points on the board or the programming cable for that. If the radio is under warranty, send it back.
If it isn't then you are most likely SOL. My radio is about a year and a half old. I've never heard of any firmware updates being available for this radio but I would not be surprised if there have been some. No idea if those would be user installable though (if even available). I'm not sure what the warranty perios is/was but I'm sure the radio is out of warranty by now.
As for the suggestion of removing power, turning the radio on, and waiting for whatever charge is there to blead down - well, the radio is effectively 'on' all the time now that the power switch is inoperable (it's stuck in the ON state). I'll try hooking power up again when I get home from work this evening, at which time the radio will have been sitting for around 24 hours with power disconnected. We'll see what happens.
I'm not savvy on JTAG or TFTP and haven't opened the radio up yet to see what's inside. There is an 1/8 inch phone jack on the front for communicating with the radio for the purpose of programming channels and such but I can't seem to communicate with the radio through that connection now. If reloading the firmware has to take place by way of that port I'm probably hosed. I'm still hopeful somebody here may have direct experience with this same problem and can either tell me how to fix (doubtful, I realize) or assure me that my radio is now a parts rig only, in which case I'll order a replacement. 73 and thanks for your input - it's much appreciated!

73 and thanks for your input - it's much appreciated! Click to expand. There is no D-Sub connector on the back of my radio but there is a place for one. I have only seen D-Subs on the two-meter version of this radio, the others don't seem to come with one. I could be wrong but I believe the DB-9 connectors (on the radios that have them) are just accessory jacks - audio in and out, key line, squelch signal, etc. Rather than a serial data. It seemed funny to me that the 220MHz version of this model wouldn't have that jack but I've only seen them on the 2m model. I'll open the radio up as soon as I have a chance (probably not until next week) and will let you know what I find inside.
